Amazing Read Summer Reading Program

Welcome to the Amazing Read Summer Reading Program!
The Amazing Read Summer Reading Program begins on 5 December 2011 and runs until 13 January 2012. This year we have 3 programs tailored to 3 age groups. Each program has it's own webpage and conditions.

  • This program is for children of preschool age. If your child is starting primary school in 2012, then this is the program for them.
  • You can join the program at only one of the libraries
  • Please pick up a reading log from your local library and enter all the library books you read with or to your child in that reading log. Your reading log is also your entry form for the prize draw.
  • Once you read five books together, you qualify for a prize pack (one prize pack per child). Feel free to read much more than that. One lucky person may even win an iPod in the national prize draw!
  • To claim your prize pack you must hand in the completed booklet at your local library by Friday 13 January 2012 at the latest and attend the AMAZING MORNING TEA PARTY at your library
For more information and details of the AMAZING MORNING TEA PARTY, click here

  • You must be in primary school to join this program.
  • You can join the program at only one of the libraries
  • Please pick up a reading log from your local library. It is also your entry form for the prize draw. Don’t worry, you’ll get the booklet back at the prize draw
  • Once you read five books, you qualify for a prize pack (one prize pack per child). But, of course, you can always read more
  • One lucky person may even win an iPod in the national prize draw!
  • To claim your prize, you must hand in your completed booklet on Friday 13 January 2012 the latest and attend the AMAZING PARTY at your library
  • You can also let others now if you liked a book or not by adding a review to Rockdale City Library's catalogue.

Amazing Teen Read
If you would like to do some reading over the summer break and go into a prize draw for movie tickets and even an iPod then here is how. Just read lots of library books between Monday 5 December 2011 and Friday 13 January 2012 and write a bunch of reviews in the library's catalogue.

Once you have added five reviews to the catalogue, you will go into the prize draw. But why stop at five reviews? Just keep writing them, as other people love reading them

How do you add a review?
  • Find the book you want to review in the library catalogue
  • Click on the link Add Your Review in the record of the book.
  • Enter your borrower ID and PIN. If you need help, just ask someone in the library
  • Choose the rating you want to give the book with 0 being very bad and 10 being very good
  • Write your review in the text box. Please use proper spelling and grammar and don’t write all in CAPS. You can write as much text as you like but your review will not be published if it is just one word or if you write something unlawful or defamatory
  • Click the Add Comment button to submit your review
  • If you have any questions about the Amazing Teen Read, please talk to a library staff member. You will be notified by Friday 27 January 2012 if you've won a prize.

Your Neighbours: The Gypsies in Australia

The Romani, colloquially known as Gypsies, originally came across the sea to the Borro Tem (Big Land), Australia with the First Fleet in 1788. The Gypsy still travels on and has become an integral part of Australian life. Examining the history of the Gypsy people since they arrived with the First Fleet, we find stories about real people and real events.

Teen Writers Get Serious

The NSW Writers' Centre has a course coming up on Saturday 6 August called Teen Writers Get Serious! with Melina Marchetta. It's a great opportunity for writers aged 16 - 18.

Are you into writing? Do you make up stories in your head or on the page? Want to take it further? Then join the internationally published, prize-winning author of Looking for Alibrandi and The Piper’s Son, Melina Marchetta, for a day of creative writing that will take your
words further.

Through a combination of theory, examples and practical exercises, Melina will explore with students the creation of tension and atmosphere, descriptive scenes and fast-paced narrative, enhancing action, characterisation, point of view, narrative tense, writing strong
dialogue and more, using techniques she has developed over years of writing. Students will complete up to four brief writing pieces throughout the day and come away with new techniques and skills for their craft along with the seeds of new stories.

This workshop is appropriate for 16-18 year olds. HSC Extension 2 English students welcome to attend.

For full details of this course and to book in, visit the NSW Writer's Centre website  or call on 9555 9757.

Miles Franklin Awards

Congratulations to Kim Scott for winning the 2011 Miles Franklin Award with his book

About The Book
This book explores the early contact between the Aboriginal Noongar people and the first European settlers. The novel's hero is a young Noongar man named Bobby Wabalanginy. Clever, resourceful and eager to please, Bobby befriends the new arrivals, joining them hunting whales, tilling the land, exploring the hinterland and establishing the fledgling colony. But slowly - by design and by accident - things begin to change. Not everyone is happy with how the colony is developing. As the Europeans impose ever stricter rules and regulations in order to keep the peace, Bobby's Elders decide they must respond in kind. Supple and accessible in style, generous in spirit and outlook, 'That Deadman Dance' is a fascinating, powerful portrait of Australia's earliest days

More information about the Award and the winners can be found at the new Miles Franklin Award website

Lunchtime Talk - Elisabeth Storrs

Rockdale City Council
Presents a talk by
Elisabeth Storrs introducing her book
The Wedding Shroud
About the book
In 406 BC, to seal a tenuous truce, the young Roman Caecilia is wedded to Vel Mastarna, an Etruscan nobleman from the city of Veii. Leaving behind a righteous society, Caecilia finds herself tempted by a mystical, hedonistic culture which offers pleasure and independence to women. Yet Mastarna and his people also hold dark secrets. Exploring themes of destiny versus self-determination and tolerance versus prejudice, The Wedding Shroud is a novel that vividly captures a historical time and place while shining a light on the lives of women of the ancient world.
